Union Government expects 600 km of Metro rail corridor by 2020

The Union Government expects the total length of Metro rail corridor in the country to become 600 km by 2020, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri said here on Tuesday.

Presiding over a meeting held in connection with the service extension of the Kochi Metro till Maharaja’s College Ground, Puri said with the extension of the stretch by 5 km, the total length of the Metro rail corridor operational in the country has become 383 km.

“Another 523 km of Metro stretches are at various stages of construction. We expect the total length of the Metro rail corridor in the country will touch 600 km in the next two years,” he said.

He said the Centre had revised its Metro rail policy recently. “We hope the state will resubmit its proposal for the second phase in tune with the new Metro rail policy. The Union Ministry will consider the revised proposal in a favourable manner,” said Puri.However, he said the success of the Metro depends very much on the maintenance factors.

“Timely implementation is not the lone yardstick for evaluating the project. We should manage the assets efficiently and maintain them properly,” he said.
