Chennai Metro: Phase-II could get approval by March 2018

The Centre and Japan International Cooperation Agency are studying a detailed project report (DPR) for Phase 2 of the Chennai metro rail project and the state government hopes to receive approval for the plan by March 2018, deputy chief minister O Paneerselvam said on Friday.

Speaking at the valedictory function of ‘Chennai as a Global City’, a conference held by Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Panneerselvam said the DPRs for multiple corridors of the bus rapid transit systems will be prepared shortly. He said a detailed report on integration of MRTS and metro rail is at an advanced stage.

The deputy chief minister said 34,580 houses will be constructed for the urban poor at the cost of 2,370.56 crore.

“History tells us that this area on the east coast of India was an active international trading centre 2,000 years ago. The modern city was founded in 1963 in an earlier wave of globalisation. Hence, Chennai has always been a global city,” he said.

He said the recent inclusion of Chennai in the list of creative cities by UNESCO was a fitting tribute to the people and culture of the city. O Paneerselvam said the state is the second largest contributor to India’s GDP and ranks third in terms of cumulative foreign direct investment flows

More than 70 members from Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), Metrowater, traffic police and others from central government departments participated in the two-day event.

MCCI president Ram Venkataramani, who spoke at the event, said the industry body has formed a steering committee that will construct an urban observatory for Chennai. The committee will record the city’s air quality, health, crime, sanitation and water.

Events with themes such as ‘Resilience and Smart Cities’, ‘Inclusion, City’s Expansion and Social Infrastructure’ had heads of city civic bodies and bureaucrats participating.
