Soon after the inauguration of the underground stretch from Thirumangalam to Nehru Park, Chennai Metro Rail began track work to extend connectivity till the Central station. Extension of this stretch will link the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL)with the Egmore and the Central stations. Egmore and Central are the next two stations after Nehru Park Metro Rail station.
According to CMRL officials, the track-laying work has begun from Egmore station and about 1.5 km needs to be completed to reach the Central station.
“The work should be over in about three months. Other civil work and trial runs will begin after that. The trial will go on for at least a month. Construction of stations is also under way,” an official said.
Once the trials are complete, routine inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety will be carried out and the stretch will be opened to the public.
CMRL hopes to extend the connectivity till the Central station by the end of the year.
However, it is not clear if construction of the largest underground station at Chennai Central will be complete by then.
At present, the underground stretch from Thirumangalam to Nehru Park connects the elevated stretch from Koyambedu to the airport via a link ramp. When the Metro station at Central is opened, the Metro Rail will offer commuters a 20-km ride.
