Kochi Metro: 61% Metro riders ready for daily trips, says survey

KOCHI: The commercial operations of the Kochi Metro has generated much public interest. According to a survey conducted by a management consultancy 61% Metro commuters were willing to travel on the rapid travel system daily.

The survey was carried out by De Valor Management Consultants, in collaboration with a group of students of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat).

They surveyed 1,484 people who took a ride on the Metro from June 23 to July 3 to get an understanding on the travel pattern as well as the concerns raised by commuters. The study indicated that 47% people who travelled on the Metro were in the age group of 18-25. A whopping 82% said the Metro journey was safe for women commuters. They were also aware of the services provided by the Metro, including the customer services, and the etiquettes to be followed while travelling on the Metro.

The study pointed out that 73% people were of the view that there were sufficient transportation facilities to reach the Metro stations.

Of the total people surveyed, 79% were first-time Metro travellers. While 53% said the Metro fares were fair, 46% complained about lack of sufficient parking facilities. On a question regarding whether commuters had difficulty in getting access to the Metro’s facilities, 75% replied they did not face such issues.

“We have gathered suggestions, which will help in improving the services. The survey report will be submitted to the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) managing director Elias George,” said Sudheer Babu, founder and managing director of De Valor. A copy will also be provided to the principal advisor of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) E Sreedharan.
