Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is offering a 20% discount on Metro rail tickets starting from Friday to October 31 on account of festival season. The discount is applicable to both tokens and travel cards, which has been made mandatory for commuting across underground stretch.
CMRL had earlier offered similar discounts when the city’s first underground line between Nehru Park and Thirumangalam was thrown open on May 14, 2017 in an attempt to encourage commuters to use metro rail facility.
Post the launch of the underground stretch, patronage for metro trains went up by at least 10,000. About 12,000 to 14,000 passengers used the service on an average a day before the underground stretch was thrown open for public.
Now, about 22,000 to 25,000 passengers commute through metro trains a day. CMRL’s daily revenue has also doubled since the increase in patronage. The daily average revenue has gone up to Rs 10 lakh from Rs 4.2 lakh.
