The Kochi metro may become a reality on June 17. The office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed the office of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday that Mr. Modi was available for commissioning the Kochi metro on June 17, sources told.
Now, the State has to take a call on the commissioning of the 13.4-km Reach I from Aluva to Palarivattom and make a formal announcement in this regard. The Chief Minister has announced that the formal inauguration will be at Aluva.
Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety K.A. Manoharan has given the mandatory clearance certificate for starting commercial operations of the Kochi metro and service trial was on.
The commissioning of the Kochi metro had got embroiled in a controversy earlier this month with Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran announcing that it would be inaugurated on May 30 with or without the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and, barely hours later, the Chief Minister rejecting his statement. Mr. Vijayan said the government had written to the Prime Minister on April 11 itself seeking a date convenient for him and was awaiting a reply.
